GET TO KNOW : Christina Cohn
Christina Cohn's ceramic mugs will be featured at our J+J Scrap Bonanza on April 21st and will be available exclusively in our Nashville showroom
CHRISTINA COHN is a Nashville native and Mom, who took her first pottery class at Vanderbilt in the early 90's. She went back to Belmont in 2011, to take classes under Master Ceramicists Jason Briggs and Matt Chenoweth. She uses a combination of slab, pinch, and coil building techniques to create her ceramics.
Since the first time we saw her work, we were eager to collaborate with her on something that combined both of our worlds. Her signature hand built mug, imprinted with our Mid-Weight T Sweater fabric, is a more natural pairing than we ever expected.
We decided to ask Christina a few questions, so you could get to know a little bit more about her + her process.
Where are you from?
What made you fall in love your craft?
My first exposure to fine craft, and ceramics, was during my early childhood. My family went every year to The American Artisan Festival, started in 1972. I fell in love with and began my appreciation for artisans and their craft. (I was accepted last year, and this year, to show at the festival and it was such a full circle moment!)
Name three adjectives that describe your practice:
humbling, exciting, challenging
Who is your biggest inspiration?
I am inspired by nature and the imperfections that make it so perfect. I truly believe our bodies and minds prefer imperfection! Handmade things scratch that itch in a way that is subtle and nurturing.
What is the most indispensible item in your studio?
What colors bring you the most joy?
I love a natural palette but I am also drawn to shades of blue and green.
What sets this collaboration apart from your regular practice?
Making these mugs with J + J handmade textiles gave me an opportunity to work with another makers work, as I worked. That was unusual and extremely enjoyable.
What is your favorite way to relax?
I love to hang with my kids and my sweet husband, George. When it is warm outside I love to be on my screened porch with a book!
What is your favorite music to listen to while you work?
I love hip hop and rap and I am digging Lemon by N.E.R.D and Rihanna this week. I also love a good podcast.
